Autumn is Lung Season. Breathe Easier with Chinese Medicine.

Recently, I was surprised when a patient told me that she was taking steroid medicine for bronchitis. I had two thoughts: First: isn’t that a bit of overkill? And second: I had successfully treated her for a skin condition, so why not try a non-invasive therapy such as cupping or acupuncture first? Then it dawned on me that I probably did not explain to her the relationship of skin, lungs and the colon. In Chinese Medicine we always take relationships of Yin and Yang organs into consideration. We look at the whole symphony orchestra that our bodies are, and not just its parts, We like to trace a problem back to its roots, so that not only the symptoms disappear, but the overall system of organs, muscles, tendons, hormones, our energy, sleep patterns etc. are functioning at its optimal level.

Another aspect of this intricate balance is the seasonal influence on our health. Ancient Chinese physicians observed the natural cycles of the seasons and recorded the best everyday practices for staying healthy. The following is an excerpt of the 3000 year old book “Huangdi Neijing”:

“In the three months of autumn all things in nature reach their full maturity. The grains ripen and harvesting occurs. The heavenly energy cools, as does the weather. This is the changing point when the yang, or active phase turns into its opposite, the yin, or passive phase. One should retire with the sunset and arise with the dawn. Just as the weather in autumn turns cool, so does the emotional climate. It is therefore important to remain calm and peaceful, so that one can make the transition to winter smoothly. One must keep the lung energy free, full, clean, and quiet. This means practicing breathing exercises to enhance Lung Qi. Refrain from polluting the lungs, and do not stay in the emotion of grief. This will prevent problems later on in the winter.”

Dry fall air, pollution, chemicals and smoke are ways in which dryness can invade and harm the Lungs. The proper moisture level of the lungs can be likened to a moist sponge after it has been rung out. Anything less (or more, as in the case of excessive phlegm) begins to impair their optimum function.

When the lung qi is strong, the body has plenty of energy. However, weak Lung qi can lead to shortness of breath and general fatigue. It is also associated with a poor immune system and other respiratory problems. The lungs are considered the first organ of defense from attacks of viruses and bacteria. Keeping them in good health can prevent colds and flus.

For those without significant lung symptoms, a course of self-administered treatment is sufficient to revitalize the lungs at this time of year. When there are complex problems, as in the case of asthma, chronic coughs, immune deficiency or sinus infections, consulting a qualified Acupuncturist/Herbalist is recommended.

HOME REMEDIES

These are simple 1-ingredient remedies which can be obtained online or from Whole Foods or a local health food store. For high quality brands, check out Gaia Herbs or Wise Women Herbals.

Ginseng Root

Ginseng is considered especially nourishing to lungs, the skin, and the stomach. Ginseng is said to moisten and cool the lungs, making it particularly useful for those with dry coughs. American Ginseng is recommended over Asian Ginseng for this purpose, as American Ginseng is considered a yin tonic that is cooling in nature, while Asian Ginseng is a yang tonic that tends to be hot in nature.

Astragalus

Astragalus is one of the most commonly used Chinese herbs for strengthening qi and the immune system. Astragalus is thought to build up the protective qi, vitalize immune defenses, and to ward off infections. Astragalus is said to be useful for those who frequently come down with colds and the flu, or have difficulty breathing (such as asthma).

Cordyceps Mushroom

Cordyceps is a powerful yang lung tonic. This medicinal mushroom was used traditionally to strengthen respiratory power in those who needed extra energy, such as athletes. It is recommended for chronic lung weakness with cough, wheezing, or shortness of breath. Cordyceps may also help boost immune strength thanks to its natural abilities to resist a wide range of pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

Schisandra

Schisandra (also spelled Schizandra) is another powerful herb for the lungs. Schisandra is revered for its astringent properties. It helps the lungs to retain whatever existing strength they currently have. It is often combined with a tonifying herb to protect the lungs from deficiencies while they are being strengthened. Traditional use for Schisandra includes asthma and wheezing.

PROFESSIONAL TREATMENT

If you suffer from asthma, chronic cough or bronchitis, immune deficiency or sinus infections, fall is a good time to consult your acupuncturist/herbalist for individualized treatment.

It is also a great time to stock up on herbal supplies, should an infection strike. Treatment of colds and flus with TCM is much like surfing: timing is everything. By the time you get an appointment and the infection has already been around for two or three days, results are not the best. But if treated right away, they are often quite spectacular.
